VAPING & E-CIGARETTES

Picture
What is an E-Cigarette? Electronic cigarettes typically use a rechargeable battery-operated heating element to vaporize the nicotine in a replaceable cartridge. Nicotine, the addictive element of tobacco, is usually dissolved in propylene glycol, a clear and colorless liquid that is commonly found in inhalers, cough medicines, and other products.

These products are also known as Vapes, Vape Pens, Hydes, JUULs, Pod Mods, Tanks, e-hookah,  e-cigars, etc.

Harmless Water Vapor? Think Again. Studies of e-cigarette aerosol, inaccurately called vapor by the industry (to make it sound "safe") have found the following chemicals:
  • Carcinogens: tobacco specific nitrosamines, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, lead, nickel and chromium
  • Heavy Metals
  • Other hazardous substances: acrolein, tin, toluene and aluminum

A TEASPOON OF E-JUICE, IF INGESTED, COULD KILL A CHILD OR ANIMAL
A TABLESPOON OF E-JUICE COULD KILL AN ADULT

Though the quantities of these harmful compounds is often less in e-cigarette aerosol than in traditional cigarette smoke, sodium, iron, aluminum and nickel have been found in higher concentrations in e-cigarette aerosol than in cigarette smoke.

Health Effects.

At this time, evidence is not sufficient to know the range or severity of adverse health effects associated with the use of                e-cigarettes or secondhand smoke exposure to aerosol from these products. However, there have been short-term studies conducted that show that vaping may cause serious health effects:

  • E-cigarettes contain nicotine, a highly addictive substance that affects the developing brain
  • Youth use of nicotine in any form is unsafe - disrupts the developing brain
  • Unsafe for pregnant women and the development of the fetus
  • E-cigarette smoke may contribute to lung and bladder cancer, as well as heart disease
  • Diacetyl a chemical used in many flavorants is shown to cause “popcorn lung” a chronic lung disease similar to COPD
  • E-cigarettes are also known to explode
